Five Commercial Sex Workers where Arrested in Accra-Ghana

The Odorkor Police Command has invaded a secret brothel and arrested five women suspected to be commercial sex workers, and some male patrons. The women, between the ages of 18 and 36, are Abena Natasha, Peace Adjorlolo, Regina Botwey, Sarah Namisi and Stella Coffie.

The police swooped on the commercial sex workers in a house behind the Odorkor Post Office with the inscription Macoroni House and allegedly caught them in the act.

Four men, Frank Aboagye, Ernest Anor, Samuel Ocloo and Charles Sam were arrested for either patronising the services of the prostitutes or hiding in a place believed to be a den for drug dealers.

Another man, Benjamin Asamoah, was found smoking an unspecified quantity of wrapped dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Criminal activities

The Odorkor Police Commander, Superintendent Abraham Acquaye, told the Daily Graphic that on March 30, 2014, the police received information that some people were engaged in commercial sex activities, narcotic drugs and other criminal activities, such as snatching mobile phones, pickpocketing and threatening people who walked past the Odorkor Post Office at night.

“So at about 1 a.m. we organised a swoop and arrested the commercial sex workers and their male counterparts,” Mr Acquaye said.

Charges

After screening and interrogating the women who were alleged to be commercial sex workers, they were charged with soliciting for sex while their male patrons were charged of assembling for unlawful purpose.

For smoking the wrapped dried leaves, Asamoah was also charged with unlawful possession of suspected narcotic drug.

The commercial sex workers and their male patrons have since been put before the Accra Circuit Court while Asamoah appeared before the Adjabeng Magistrate Court in Accra.

The suspects were all granted bail to appear again on May 5, 2014 and April 7, 2014 respectively.

Mr Acquaye said the police would be conducting more of such swoops, especially during the Easter festivities, to curb incidents of crime in the city.

“We want the public to live without fear or intimidation,” he assured.
